The deal

  1. Use the nines through aces, 24 cards. Partners sit across from each other. Deal five cards each in threes and twos, then turn the next card face up on the kitty.
  2. Starting left of the dealer, each player can order it up, which makes that suit trump, or pass. If someone orders it up, the dealer picks up that card and discards one.
  3. If all four pass, turn it face down. Go around again and anyone can name a different suit as trump or pass. If it gets back to the dealer, the dealer has to pick a suit.
  4. Trump from high to low: jack of trump (right bower), the other jack of the same color (left bower), then ace, king, queen, ten, nine. The left bower counts as trump, not as its own suit.
  5. The player left of the dealer leads. Follow suit if you can. If you can't, trump it or throw off any card. Highest trump wins the trick, otherwise the highest card of the suit led. Whoever wins leads next.
  6. If the team that called trump takes three or four tricks, they get 1 point. All five is 2 points. If they take fewer than three they're euchred and the other team gets 2. First team to 10 wins.

House notes

The player who calls trump can go alone. Their partner puts their cards down and sits out the hand. Taking all five tricks alone is worth 4 points, and three or four is still 1. The deal moves left each hand. Use the leftover fives and sixes to keep score.
